Basic Blackjack Rules

Blackjack is a gambling game also known as twenty-one or in French; Vingt-et-un. It is played all over the world in land casinos and online casinos and has over the years become one of the most popular casino games available.

Players of blackjack compete against the dealer, not competing against other players. The goal of the game is to get a hand of cards that have a higher points value than the dealer's hand but that does not go over the sum total of 21. Going over 21 is referred to as "bust" as you bust out of the game regardless of the dealer's hand.

Blackjack hands value is determined by adding the individual card value of cards dealt. All cards carry their numeric value except for face cards (jack, queen, kind) that carry the value of 10 and aces that count as 1 or 11, depending on what benefits the player's or dealer's hand.

The best hand in blackjack is a 2-card hand consisting of an ace and another card valued at 10 points. Such a hand will be valued at 21 and is the best hand in blackjack and referred to as a natural blackjack.

When play commences the player is dealt two cards face up and the dealer is dealt two cards; one face up and one face down.

When the dealer is showing an ace card the player is given the option of taking insurance that the dealer will hit a natural blackjack by making an additional wager up to half the amount of their original wager, thus protecting yourself from losing your entire bet when the natural is hit.

If the dealer does not have a natural blackjack play continues and the player then has four basic moves they can make:

Hit: receive an additional card from the dealer. The player can draw as many cards as they wish until they hit 21 or go bust.

Stand: receive no additional cards and remain with the hand value you have.

Split: when the two cards the player is holding are of equal value the player can split them into two hands by adding a second bet that is equal to their initial bet.

Double Down: the player will get a chance to increase their initial bet by 100% for the right to hit a single card and then stand.

Some variants of blackjack offer another type of move:

Surrender: after the initial deal once the dealer has checked they do not have a natural blackjack, a player that feels their hand is not good enough to continue playing can opt to give up their hand and be refunded half their original bet.
